Buffet Menu Planning

A useful buffet brief connects the food to the event. Before choosing individual options, decide when people will eat, how many portions you need and what role the meal plays in the day. Fables provides hot and cold buffet catering for businesses, weddings and private celebrations across the UK.

Start with the meal you want to provide

Is the buffet a working lunch, the main meal at a celebration or food for an evening reception? Explain that purpose when you enquire. Include any food served elsewhere in the programme and whether guests will eat together or arrive over a period of time.

Fables’ options include sandwich platters, grazing platters, hot buffets, BBQs and bespoke menus. Browse the current menu collection, then describe your preferences and budget. Your quotation confirms the actual selection and quantities rather than a general menu description.

Turn guest numbers into a clear brief

State how many people the buffet should serve. Keep an estimated attendance visibly separate from the final number, and identify which guests are included if the event has different daytime and evening groups. Use our guest numbers and portions guide when preparing your enquiry.

List food preferences separately from requests involving an intolerance. An ordinary menu preference does not confirm that a dish is suitable for a particular dietary requirement.

Plan the service as well as the food

Delivery and full service are quote-specific. Decide whether you need delivery, setup, serving, clearing or equipment, and ask for each agreed item to be explicitly listed in your quotation. Include the intended serving time, available tables, loading access and any setup restrictions.

For staffed catering, service ends when the booked quantity has been served or the agreed service period ends, whichever comes first. Guest waste, bins and venue cleaning remain the client’s or venue’s responsibility unless otherwise agreed with Fables. Check these arrangements with your venue while planning the menu.

Food intolerances and allergies

Fables caters for agreed food intolerances only. We do not cater for food allergies.

Please discuss any food intolerance with us before booking so we can confirm whether we can accommodate it. A request is included only once Fables has expressly confirmed the arrangements; entering it on a form does not confirm acceptance.

Our kitchens and mobile catering units handle allergens, and cross-contact can occur. We provide ingredient and allergen information, but do not guarantee allergen-free food. Vegan options are not necessarily suitable for someone with a food allergy.

Coeliac disease requires separate consideration and must not be treated as an ordinary intolerance request. Do not assume our food is suitable.

Confirm the agreed intolerance requirements and portion numbers on your final booking form, and tell us promptly about any changes. Please do not include guests’ names or medical histories.

Read our catering FAQs before booking.

Buffet planning questions

Should I choose a menu before asking for a quote?

You can start with a preferred style and budget. Send the event details and any choices that matter to you, so the menu discussion has a practical starting point.

What if my numbers or plans change?

Tell us promptly. Changes to portions, serving time, venue or service may affect the agreed arrangements and need to be confirmed with Fables.
