How to choose a marquee size: start with the layout

Marquee home · Marquee journal

A guest number is a starting point. The way people use the space is what makes the brief useful.

Describe the event before choosing dimensions

One hundred guests at a seated meal do not use a space in the same way as one hundred people at a standing reception. Add a dance floor, a bar or a stage and the arrangement changes again. Before asking which marquee size to hire, write a short description of the event and the activities that need a place.

For a wedding, separate daytime dining from evening attendance. For a business event, identify different sittings or shifts. Say whether everyone needs a seat at the same time and whether the furniture will stay in position throughout. These details give the hire team a much better starting point than a single attendance total.

List the areas that need to fit

Begin with guest seating, then list the other elements you want inside or beside the marquee. Think about dining tables, a dance floor, a bar, a serving point, a presentation area and any quieter seating. Include equipment being supplied by other businesses, because it still needs an agreed position.

Circulation and practical access belong in this conversation too. A plan should not consist only of furniture packed into a rectangle. The team needs to consider how guests and staff will use the arrangement, and how catering or other services will operate.

Describe the usable site

Measure the area actually available for the proposed installation and photograph its boundaries, surface and approach. A large garden may have trees, fixed objects, slopes or narrow access that affect the options. Do not assume that a structure will fit simply because its stated footprint is smaller than the lawn.

Tell the team about venue restrictions and whether there are limits on delivery, installation or collection times. The actual installation requirements and suitable structure must be confirmed for the site. General planning information cannot establish that on its own.

Ask for a complete proposal

A useful marquee quotation connects the structure with the layout and the services being supplied. Ask which flooring, lighting, furniture and finishing touches are included, and what remains to be arranged by you or the venue.

Published examples and real photographs are helpful inspiration. Treat them as a way to explain your preferences, rather than a guarantee of a particular capacity or package. Send Fables your date, venue postcode, headcounts and proposed activities so the team can assess the brief and prepare a suitable quotation for your event.
